Talking microbes – understanding microbial interactions within One Health framework

Integrative Physiology of Gnotobionts group, PI M. Schwarzer
Laboratory of Gnotobiology, Institute of Microbiology, Nový Hrádek, Czech Republic

We study how the nutritional environment and intestinal microbial communities together affect mammalian host physiology, specifically in the context of mucosal immune system development and the juvenile growth. Laboratory of Gnotobiology has a long standing track of breeding and using germ-free mice and germ-free piglet models in biomedical preclinical research. Within the project we will closely collaborate with laboratories in Prague at Institute of Microbiology, Charles University and the University of Chemistry and Technology on research projects encompassing juvenile growth, germ-free antigen-free mouse model, bacteria and bacteria-derived postbiotic immunomodulatory properties and targeted delivery of bioactive compounds.

Recent publications:

Microbe-mediated intestinal NOD2 stimulation improves linear growth of undernourished infant mice
A standardized gnotobiotic mouse model harboring a minimal 15-member mouse gut microbiota recapitulates SOPF/SPF phenotypes
Lactobacillus plantarum strain maintains growth of infant mice during chronic undernutrition
Exopolysaccharide from Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus induces IgA production in airways and alleviates allergic airway inflammation in mouse model
Molecular weight and gut microbiota determine the bioavailability of orally administered hyaluronic acid

Requirements:

Successful candidates must have a doctoral degree (PhD, MD/PhD, or MD), and a track record of productivity with peer-reviewed publications. They should demonstrate motivation and aptitude for learning and taking on new challenges and have good oral and written English communication skills. Operational autonomy is expected with organization and collaborative skills. Evidence of strong interest in nutrition and host-microbe interaction is requested.
